CE#4: Improving Self-driving Cars
In a recent article published by the University of Michigan on their news page, the threats and holes in the cybersecurity of the new self-driving cars are revealed. Cyber security has become a huge concern in society due to the fact that most of our technology has the potential of being hacked and used against us. The self-driving cars are no different; there is a possibility driver's cars can get hacked and the driver could be sent to a different location then attended or the hacker could hold the driver for a ransom. Although this may sound hypothetical, it is extremely possible because cyber security is over looked in the development of self-driving cars. This could lead to harmful outcomes such as a person's car can shut down at any moment a hacker desires which could cause crashes. The article also states that although the advancement of technology is great for society we should not hesitate to scrutinize because if we don't there is a possibility of holes being left unclosed that people can exploit. We should be able to use newly developed technology with ease and without a high concern that it may harm us.
Although I am not a driver yet, this is a relevant article because in the future it means the roads will be safer and if I ever decide to buy a self-driving car then I can be sure it is safe. Actually, this is relevant to me currently because I am usually a passenger in cars, so even if it may affect the driver, it does not mean passengers will be completely safe. Also I believe that improving cybersecurity should be close to top priority when developing new technology because in this day and age, hacking has become so advanced. I agree with the article, people should be able to use new technology without fear because it is the job of the manufacturer to create a product that is safe to use. This article revealed an important fault in self-driving cars that needed to be addressed and thanks to it we will improve the technology.
