Different Diplomas, Different Requirements
Even though I've known that there are three different types of diplomas offer, generally, I never really been told by school staff the requirements for each diploma; I only figured out the requirements when I googled it. however, today I finally got a sheet with all the requirements for getting a regents or advanced regents diploma. the major difference between a regents and advanced regents diploma is the foreign language section. A requirement for advanced regents is you have to have accumulated at least 6 credits in a foreign language and take the LOTE, an exam that is basically the regents exam. since you only need 44 credits to get a regents or advanced regents diploma the extra credits you get from the foreign language class is taken from electives, so you only need 3 elective credits for an advanced regents diploma; a regular regents diploma requires at least 7 elective credits. since I'm in a CTE academy in my school, I do not have to take the extra foreign language class, nor do I have to take the LOTE exam. this is because the CTE class takes the place of the foreign language class.
On top of having the opportunity to receive an advanced regents diploma, I also have the chance to receive a CTE endorsement for completing the Web Design academy. this means I get to wear a special sash on graduation day and get a pin for my efforts. now, getting an advanced regents diploma is a huge achievement on its own, but if I were to also get the cte endorsement then I would be a level above most other students. it could also be in a sense a sort of insurance if I choose to take a gap time between graduating high school and entering college. with the endorsement I am a certified web designer, so I am able to apply and get a job in web designing right after graduating. now if I choose to further pursue a career in web designing or computer science then when I apply for colleges I will stand out from other applicants because I already will have three years of experience. at the end of the day having the CTE endorsement and an advanced regent diploma means I will have an advantage against most of my peers
