Hour of Code
Today, all around the world, the Hour of Code took place for people to learn computer science. My school was no exception and since I already participated in the Hour of Code before this time I mentored freshmen that had yet to experience the Hour of Code. Therefore, to make it more interesting for the freshmen, we allowed them to code different websites such as creating the solar system or animating their own name. This struck s by surprise because we weren't told that we would mentor until two minutes before the freshmen came in. They came in, watched a video from code.org and afterwards we were to pair up with a freshman and take them to our computers to guide them in their journey. The first freshmen that I was assigned to was actually a sophomore that already took the Hour of Code, so I thought she'd be experienced. I was wrong in my assumption because she forgot all that she did the previous year and was quite lost. She worked on the solar system project and actually finished.
The second freshmen I had wasn't as smooth sailing as the first one. His name was Nathan, and even though he was trying his hardest, he didn't really understand what he was doing. I assume this was because he was inexperience, but it still took him quite a while to complete each step. He was working on animating your own name and he also finished. We would've continued to finish the solar system project if the computer didn't bug out and delete the code every time we pressed "save and submit"
Overall, it was a great experience because it was the first time I had the opportunity to mentor someone and be a sort of master. Also it gave me a good reflection on how far I've come because as I watched the freshmen I thought, that was me two years ago. I realized I've come a long way and improved in many ways. Maybe those freshmen will have a similar experience in the coming years.
