CE#4: No more Dictionaries?
In an article by Matthew Hutson, titled "Artificial intelligence goes bilingual—without a dictionary, Hutson reveals another breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence(AI) technology. Now, AIs can translate languages without being taught the language before hand because the neural networks withing the system learns from experience, just like humans do. That doesn't mean that the AI can fully function without supervision, but that may not necessarily true in the coming years or months. This is because two new systems have been created focusing on unsupervised machine learning. The UPV system compares two papers in different languages has two steps in learning how to translate: back translation and denoising. Back translation is when a sentence in one language is roughly translated into another and then translated back to the original language, and denoising, which is similar, translates a sentence then rearranges or removes words and translate the sentence back. The other system, created by Guillaume Lample, a Facebook computer scientist, adds an extra step to the UPV system which improves the accuracy in which the system translate. Although a computer cannot translate as accurate as a human could, it is fascinating to see that a computer can translate without having human supervision.
For me, even though this is quite an amazing feat, there is this lingering fear in the back of my mind. I just feel like if computer don't need us to virtually learn a new language and this technology will only keep advancing, there could be a time when computers don't need humans at all. I know this is all merely science fiction, as of now, but it could possibly become reality at the rate which AI technology is growing. In the end, this is an innovation that could potentially change how people translate between languages or even how people learn new languages, and it is marvelous to see how technology advances over the years.
