CE#2- AI on our Phones

In a article published this past Tuesday, Matthew Grant discussed the development of  Artificial Intelligence(AI) being made at the University of Waterloo.  The researchers in charge of this project made it so a new deep-learning AI software is compressed enough to fit on a mobile computer chip or in orders van function on anything from smartphones to robots. Not only is this AI software compact it is also fully functional. This incredible feat was accomplished by mimicking the natural world, in other words, the researchers placed the AI in a virtual environment and kept deriving the resources it had. This made it so the AI would adapt and evolve to the changing environment and eventually compressing it to fit on a mobile computer chip. This was possible because deep-learning AI mimics the human brain; therefore, it will evolve as it is exposed to new stimuli such as the human brain does. Now, the development of this new AI is useful to the public because now deep-learning AI can fit on your phone without having to use severe mobile data or internet services. However, the end for these researchers aren't done yet, as stated by Shafiee, a systems design engineering research professor at Waterloo, "and if it works, we keep going and push harder".
After reading this article, I got goosebumps because initially AI seemed like technology that would only be accessible in the distant future. Now, that I learned that AI is something that could be witnessed in my lifetime it is exciting but also worrisome. In mainstream media artificial intelligence always ends up with robots conquering the world and disposing of humans, so hopefully this doesn't turn out like the movies. However, I believe this is just an example of how human technology progresses and this could be the next step of creating a world where AI is a useful tool for man.
