DNS( Domain Name System)

why does the Internet use IP address?
The Internet uses  IP addresses because it makes it simpler to communicate across the Internet. Each device has an IP address that follows the Internet Protocol, a set of rules for connecting over the Internet.

Why don't we need to know IP addresses?
we don't need to know because the DNS servers convert the URL into IP addresses. the computer sends a request to the DNS servers fir the IP address of a device or website and then it send the address back to the computer. it eliminates the need to memorize multiple numbers.

Why do we need a Domain Name System?
if we didn't have a Domain Name System then we would have to know each IP address for all the websites we wanted to look for. instead of searching the actual name of the website you would have to type in numbers that coordinate with the specific website which would be much more of a hassle then remembering the URL of the website.

Why don't we all maintain our own DNS?
we don't maintain our own DNS because the servers pertain to multiple people and router, not just ourselves. Its a system of connected servers that rely on each other for information that is not known; therefore, having individual servers will restrict the amount of information the severs has. Also there would be too many DNS servers connected which could cause an overflow of data.

Is there one big DNS for the entire internet?
There is not one big DNS there multiple DNS in order to maintain reliability and secure functionality.

How do you think all these DNS servers are maintained?
In my mind, there are many people working that observe the DNS servers to see if there are any problems and make sure to update the IP address of websites that changed their IP address. The DNS servers are basically a infinite phone book, so it has to be updated to avoid confusion.

What is one vulnerability of DNS and how is that vulnerability attacked?
A vulnerability of DNS is cache poisoning or DNS spoofing. This is  form of computer hacking which can result in the hacking changing the IP address of a website causing people to arrive at a fake website. It causes the victim to go to the hacker's computer or any computer desired by the hacker.

What are the implications of an attack on a DNS server- how does this affect your life?
The implications of an attack on  a DNS server is if you end up on a website or page that you did not attend to be on. This means you a victim of DNS spoofing. This affects my life because this means at any point I have a chance to be one of those victims. My information then becomes vulnerable for the hacker to view and take to use.
